Necromancers & Necromancy

There are actually two types of necromancers.
There are those who have learned and practice the 'art' of necromancy - ie; raising, contacting, controlling the dead as well as using death in their magic to strengthen it. These are a variety of witches, both hereditary and learned, as well as fae or other 'magically inclined' beings.
Their 'necro abilities'  are a twisted version of their own magics combined with 'lore'.. usually aided by some form of demon or 'dark' being.

A true necromancer is born. Usually they're a mix of fae and witch blood, but not always. They do always have at least one of these bloodlines. To current knowledge there has never been a 'pure blood' necromancer ie: a pure blood witch, or full blood fae... A necromancer is always a half breed. One reason why 'inter marriage' and 'crossbreeds' are outlawed in some races and in many witch families.

As a child, a necromancer will be more 'psycic' than anything else and have a natural 'comfort' level dealing with death related things. There is no ' coming of age' for a necromancer. At some point in their lives they die... once this happens their full necro abilities are awakened and they return.

Up until their death they are 'normal' people. They can have children, families, etc. They won't show much of anything for 'magical' abilities aside from a 'sixth sense' or 'psycic' ability, however. Once they come back from the dead  their powers are fully functional ; for example, they can see hear and feel spirits;  summon spirits and raise zombies;  and they can resurrect the dead, to a point. A true necro, if they are strong enough, can summon the soul back into its body and reanimate it. This is more than a mere zombie and can be extremely traumatic to the soul. There is a 'myth' that if the body is freshly deceased and in good shape and the necro strong enough, they could actualy return that body to life. As far as it is known however, this has never been accomplished.

Necromancy is not believed to be hereditary ; necromancers themselves are infertile ; they can have children until their deaths, but once they come into their powers and their bodies have 'died', they loose that ability. There has been some debate about whether or not this would be true for a necromancer who died as a child - before his body matured.

Necromancers as a whole are generally rare and much sought after by practioners of the darker arts. Most fae  and many witches will either kill or 'expose' a suspected necromancer. Most of this is due to the 'bad press' generated by the 'others' who practice necromancy.
