Awakenings

The soft knock at her door had Devin on his feet and running, his crayons forgotten, tumbling to the floor. "Devin... No! Wait...!" Chaos laughed chasing after the toddler, leaving the scattered crayons where they lay by the coffe table. She scooped him up just as they reached the door, and she hung him, giggling, upside down as she opened the door. "Auron! Hi.. come in.." She said, stepping to the side.

He paused just inside the door and closed it behind himself, his eyes crinkled in amusement. "I see the two of you are enjoying yourselves. Ah! And I see you've lost something..?!"

Chaos looked up startled after setting Devin back on his feet. "Wha..?Oh! " She gave a soft chuckle. "The wings, yeah. Finally got them to change out with the rest of me. Wasn't easy, let me tell you... seems like I can still feel them at times though. They kinda itch..." She turned and watched Devin race off back to the coffee table to the crayons and colouring book Sienna had given him. "Sorry, I don't mean to be rude. Please, come in and sit down. Can I get you anything?"

Auron smiled, following her to the couch and sitting down across from where Devin was kneeling on the floor, hard at work. "No thank you, Clarice, I'm fine. Please.." He patted the cusion next to him. "I'd like to speak with you... I feel we need to talk... about..what's happened..."

Chaos gave a sad sigh and sat beside him, slightly farther away then the spot he'd indicated, but still close. "I know. I haven't meant to avoid you, really. Things have just been..."

"I know." He said, placing a hand over hers. "I know this is... awkward... so much has happened... so many years have gone by..."

She smiled, staring at their hands. Finally she sighed and looked up at his face. "I remember... I know... I keep seeing a ring..." She glanced down at her ring finger as if expecting to see one there. "We were married, weren't we... once..."

He nodded, one finger stroking the place her wedding band used to be. "Yes, I remember that too... they took everything...destroyed everything that could..." his voice caught and he looked away for a moment, looking instead to Devin.

Chaos sighed, letting her eyes roam over his face again before looking away as well. "I'm not the same person anymore. The woman you were married too... it wasn't me... not the 'me' I am now...."

He nodded, slowly, sadly. " I understand... things have happened... we've both been through so much..." He turned back to look at her, his hand holding hers a bit tighter, but still gently. "But once we loved each other so strongly that we pledged our lives to each other forever...maybe... I still feel some of that, Clarice.. i mean... I feel like, that's all still here." He placed his free hand on his chest, above his heart. " If it hadn't been for Honnor's meddling...." He sighed. "Perhaps... in time...."

Chaos smiled nervously, squeezing his hand. "I don't know... Auron... I ..."

"I won't push, Clarice, just... tell me.... do you feel it too?"

Silence greeted his question as she struggled to find her voice.." Yes, Auron,.. but...."

"Ah! Please...." He smiled, one finger pressed against her lips. "That's good enough."

She gave a soft laugh and turned away, her gaze going once again to Devin. "Shall we change the subject? I'm not very good with..."

Auron gave a soft chuckle. "Of course" he said, he gaze still locked on her face. His heart full with the knowledge that she still harboured feelings for him after all this time, even if she wasn't ready to explore them.

And she still held his hand.

He cleared his throat softly."Have you remembered anything more?"

She kept her eyes on Devin as she slowly nodded her head. "Feelings mostly I guess...a few random images of us... sometimes I can hear voices speaking. Honnor's and Darkness's... they're faint but I can make out some of what they're saying."

Auron watched her, her eyes never leaving Devin. "They talk about us being a threat to their plans as long as we're together, right? How they need us seperated so that I can find someone else..."

Chaos turned, glanced into his eyes briefly before turning away quickly, nodding. She quickly raised a hand and wiped her face. Auron did his best not to let on that he'd seen her eyes filling with tears... "Is that all?"

She took a deep breath, once again staring intently at Devin. "I keep having this 'dream' i guess, but I see it when I'm awake too, sort of... kind of superimposed over things, like a ghost..."

"A little girl..." Auron said, watching the surprised yet sad look as she looked back at him.

"With pale blonde hair and laughing blue eyes...." She said, hardly more then a whisper.

He nodded, sadly. The sound of crayons scratching on paper had stopped, causing them both to turn back to Devin. He was staring at them, looking like he was gonna burst into tears at any second. Chaos opened her arms and he clambored to his feet and ran around the table to climb onto her lap and snuggled in her arms.

Auron sat there, leaning forward, his arms resting on his legs, one hand still holding hers, watching them. He ducked his head, looking at the floor while he struggled to regain control, forcing the wetness in his eyes away. "I... uh... I think I might know who she is. The girl..."

Chaos looked up, her eyes brimming, and nodded. "Me too... I just... "

Auron reached out towards them and stopped, his hand hanging in mid air a breath away from Devin's hair. "I think .. he could show us. Like he did before..."

Chaos looked at his hand then down into Devins eyes. With a sad smile she looked back up at Auron, her own hand paused before touching his. " I'm afraid, Auron... if it's true, then... how could we forget her?!"

"Clarice... we didn't have a choice. We didn't forget her, or each other.. it was all taken from us. The question we have to ask now is, are we ready to take it back?"

She dropped her gaze to his hand, took a deep breath, closed her eyes and took his hand in her own, pulling it closer to Devin.Together they both placed gentle hands on his head.

At first there was nothing but the warm comforting touch itself. Devin sat still cradled in her arms, Auron beside them, his hands in hers... Then suddenly warm air was carressing her face and she was sitting on the ground, Auron stretched out beside her. His hair was longer, down to his shoulders, and there wasn't as much silver and grey peppering it. His face looked oddly naked without the trim beard, but he was smiling.

She felt she should glance around at their surroundings, but at the moment she didn't want to look anywhere else but at him. "Auron..."

"I know Clarice... We're here... where ever Devin brought us to..."

She looked around in shock, at the field full of flowers and the trees behind them, the picnic blanket spread out beneath them... "This isn't just a memory... it's different... stronger..! We're really here...?!"

Auron smiled and reached out, taking her hand in his. "We certainly have control over our selves this time.. we're not just witnessing..."

"Mommy!"

They both turned to see a smiling face framed by wisps of pale blonde hair appear above the tall grass and flowers. Pig tails bouncing, the little girl emerged, running from the tall grass onto the shorter turf, a fist full of flowers thrust out before her. She plopped down on the blanket between them. "I picked these for you! Aren't they pretty?"

Chaos, eyes brimming so full that all she could see was a blur of colour, accepted the flowers, her hands trembling. "They... they're beautiful... thank you....Regan."

Auron, eyes just as full, reached a tentative hand out to stroke the soft blonde hair. "You are so beautiful, Regan."

Regan laughed and threw her arms around Auron's neck in a hug, then bounded away back into the tall grasses. "I'll pick you some too, daddy!"

The two of them sat there, tears streaming down their cheeks, watching the spot she'd vanished. "Oh.. god.. Auron..."

He scooted forward across the blanket and wrapped her in his arms as they both burst into tears.

Then the warm breeze was gone, and the weight of Devin in her lap between them reappeared.

Without a sound, Devin squirmed out from between them and returned to his scribbling.

Auron pulled her closer, wrapping his arms tighter around her as she buried her face in his chest, sobs stealing away her breath.

"Our daughter.. our Regan... they took, her... Auron.. what did they do to her? All these years...." She gasped between sobs, her whole body shaking.

Auron just held her, his own face wet with tears. "I don't know, Clarice.. but we'll find out.. we'll find her. " He rested his cheek against the top of her head, closing his eyes. "We'll make them pay for this, sweetheart. I promise.."
